OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, JANUARY 31, 2008 – Exhibitions West will open during a reception held on February 8, 2008 from 6 pm – 8 pm, at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum® in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Exhibitions West consists of three exhibits, The Rodeo Photography of Louise Serpa, Real Western Wear: Beaded Gauntlets from the William P. Healey Collection, and Stomp Dance and Stickball: Southeastern Imagery from the Silberman Collection.
During the opening reception two special guests, Louise Serpa and William P. Healey, will be on hand for discussion and questions. This opening will include light hors d'œuvres and a short program.
The Rodeo Photography of Louise Serpa exhibit includes 50 silver gelatin photographic prints, the documentary “When the Dust Settles” and a 2004 interview with Serpa conducted by Chuck Rand, the Museum’s Director of the Dickinson Research Center.
Real Western Wear: Beaded Gauntlets from the William P. Healey Collection brings to life the vibrant colors and intricate designs of Native American embellishment from the private collection of Western art collector William P. Healey. Real Western Wear presents 73 pair of decorated gloves from the collection, and reflects the design diversity and technical virtuosity of the Plains, Plateau and Great Basin Indian artists who produced these objects from the 1890s through the 1940s.
Stomp Dance and Stickball: Southeastern Imagery from the Silberman Collection features more than 30 works by 20th-century artists of Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole ancestry. The exhibit’s title refers to two cultural institutions that are regionally important and that are directly or indirectly represented in many of the displayed works. Artistic renderings of the Trail of Tears also appear prominently in the exhibit, as do images showing regional scenes of everyday life. Roughly half of the exhibited works are by Creek/Seminole artist Jerome Tiger. Another 10 are by Creek artist Fred Beaver.
Tickets are available for the Exhibitions West Opening Reception, February 8, 2008 from 6 pm-8 pm. Opening reception ticket prices are $10 for National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum members and $15 for nonmembers. For tickets call (405) 478-2250, Ext. 219.
The three exhibits will remain open at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum through May 4, 2008.
