Originally the shaded area
on the map was designed to separate so-called civilized
Indians from the 'scalpers,' both types were being moved
unwillingly into the Indian Territory, now Oklahoma, all
of which once was reserved for them 'as long as grass grows
and water flows.' Whites moved into the shaded area, which
was unoccupied and cattlemen from Texas also built semi-permanent
housing facilities, and grazed the land roundabout, enroute
to the rail heads in Kansas. |
